Did you know bulls are quite agile on their hooves and can car surf in the back of a trailer? The girls volleyball team made this discovery as we meandered our way up the Snowy Mountains to kick off our 2025 CHS campaign.
We had a new captain, Sari J and with Edie F they would be our new setter team. Kahlei H was also in the starting six and joined Macie B as our blocking combo. Our attack was galvanised by Viv C and Jess R. The team also welcomed a debutant Jayce G to their first tournament.
Up first was Eden Marine, like always we had a nervous start but soon settled into the job. Like a terminator on a mission the team served, digged, set and attacked and won the game with five minutes to go on the clock.
Bombala tried to challenge our calculated calm on court but were likewise rebuffed with authority.
Our victories looked inevitable but we had a three game run with no breaks coming up and our old adversary, Narooma, waiting for us at the end of the day. Monaro had two teams and we easily accounted for the “B” team and we had carved out a handy lead against the “A” team by taking the first set. But pity the foolish because then we hit a wall and the A-Team swooped in, taking the second set and leading us in the third set when the buzzer went.
No time to take deep settling breaths; we hustled on to the court to face the star-studded Narooma team. The first set started as a relaxed stroll for Narooma but then we started to dig deep. The first set went to Narooma and we slowly, quietly and methodically started to challenge the opposition and just as the buzzer was about to draw an end to the game it was 18 playing 18. The ref announced, “Next point wins the set.” A draw was possible… The difference between possible and probable are coin tosses and we just couldn’t get that final point.
We played our best set against the best team after a long day. We may have finished second but we are going to the next round and maybe…just maybe…the coin will land heads for us when next we meet Narooma.
