The cool morning silent reverence is broken by the trumpeter peeling a rouse that allows the gathered young and old to continue that unbroken echo in Australian history. This is ANZAC Day 2025; 110 years since the Gallipoli landing and 80 Years since the end of World Wars.
The leaders of Moruya High School donned their uniforms to attend the four ceremonies in the local area. Among the gathered families are other students, some with families and some with the cadets, surf life saving and the pony club are among the many different groups that took a moment to pause and pay tribute to those who have served their country.
In my time organising students to participate to attend and lay ceremonies; never have the leaders asked why. Never have tried to negotiate a more favourable time. Never have these young people shirked the responsibility of honouring ANZAC Day. The names and faces may change but the commitment does not waver.
From the sunrise ceremony at Tuross Head, on to the early morning march at Tomakin, through to the touching ceremony at Bergalia and finishing with a traffic stopping march through Moruya; our students were there.
The Anzacs were unyielding and unbroken in 1915 and our students, as inheritors of the sacrifices of those who have served, are adding to that tradition of reverence every year.
The veterans keep fading but Moruya High’s commitment to honouring their service is unwavering.
