Year 10 Agriculture have been busy in Term 1 with lots of summer crops being harvested and enjoyed by cooking up savory Japanese pancakes with greens, herbs and carrots and a delicious autumnal pumpkin pie with fresh pumpkins from the Ag plot. Students also attended an excursion to Durras Hydroponics to see an amazing system growing a range of produce such as tomatoes, strawberries, herbs, lettuce, microgreens, capsicums and much more. Students got an insight into the technology, planning, time and cost required for such a system to be successful. They each enjoyed a freshly made ice cream made with Durras Hydroponics strawberries to top off a great trip!
This term, Year 10 Agriculture students have been learning about hydroponic systems. In this topic we have been shown that plants can not only grow in soil but in systems with nutrient rich water! At Moruya High School we have our very own hydroponic system called the NFT (nutrient film technique) system which allows us to learn first hand how to set up and use this system to grow fresh herbs like dill and coriander, Asian greens and lettuce.
An insight from Year 10 Agriculture student Zoe O’K.
Along with this topic we have been learning how to save our own seeds which helps save money and is a sustainable way to grow local produce. In our wicking beds we have been growing summer crops such as watermelon, rockmelon, pumpkins, corn and tomatoes which were harvested throughout Term 1. As it comes into autumn plants such as spring onions, pak choi, cauliflower, carrot, spinach, rocket, peas and broad beans can be sown directly into the soil, artichoke crowns and garlic can be planted now.
Agriculture this term has been really fun, informative and interesting and we are keen for the next topics in year 10.
