Did you know Japanese people eat a unique type of curry regularly? Curry was introduced to Japan during the Meiji era (1868-1912). The fame of the dish in Japan is mainly due to the Imperial Japanese Navy, and it is now eaten as much as tempura and sushi! The flavour has evolved over time, and now stands on its own as uniquely Japanese.
Year 9 were surprised to learn that Japanese people consume curry regularly. In class students learned that in Japan, curry is eaten at home, on camps and in restaurants. Cooking is always a popular activity for Japanese classes, so to celebrate the end of term year 9 made curry with rice, which was perfect comfort food after a busy term.
Many teachers and students passing the cooking rooms were intrigued by the curry, and there was enough for extra staff and students to try out the dish. It was a hit with everyone!
Everybody was surprised at how easy this was to make and all students present said they felt confident they could make this dish for family. The basic ingredients are onion, potatoes and carrots, plus the curry mix which can be bought from your local supermarket.
Sensei has said Year 9 homework for the school holidays is to make this curry for their family.
While year 9 were preparing curry, the year 10 Japanese class wanted to make something sweet this time, so the class tried out a recipe for dorayaki. Dorayaki is a honey pancake sandwich filled with a sweet red bean paste. Students and sensei were impressed with how the sweet red bean paste turned out – delicious! Fun fact: Doraemon loves to eat dorayaki!
Year 10 are looking forward to attempting mochi later in the year. We are grateful to share and utilise the fabulous industry standard Hospitality and Food Technology rooms to prepare and cook our food.
