The Art and Craft of Writing

Creative Writing Group

Our Creative Writing Group (CWG) was treated to a presentation from our very own English teacher Mr Finn Rivers. The group were engrossed in learning about the process Mr Rivers has undertaken in worldbuilding and honing his own craft as a writer.

Mr Rivers, who has been teaching English for 15 years, has only recently started to apply his expertise to his own writing. While teaching a novel to one of his English classes last year, Mr Rivers decided to set himself the challenge of writing a story that would engage the interest and enthusiasm of his students; one that more authentically reflected the experiences and challenges of what it's like to be an adolescent. During his presentation he told the group that "I think the motivation to write has always been hidden away inside me somewhere. I just needed the 'write' conditions to allow it to bloom."

The group thoroughly enjoyed Mr Rivers' presentation - eagerly participating in activities and taking notes. CWG's oldest member and aspiring writer Charlie F was characteristically enthusiastic to talk about writing and said: "I thought it was interesting to get the perspective of someone who actually has a writing habit. I like how he shared some of his techniques about when he writes and how he fits it into his schedule. It helped me to think about how to schedule writing into [my own] life." Charlie also stated that the group "Definitely got a good perspective on what a writer's life is like and the process and thought that goes into creating a book. To create such an interesting and unique world and to create something that you want people to invest in takes time."

We are so proud to have staff and students who are invested in engaging with the craft of writing and who are willing to share their knowledge and interest with our writing community.

Moruya High School's Creative Writing Group meets every Wednesday afternoon in A2 at 3:30 pm. For more information, please see Miss Wall in the English Staffroom.
