Our year 12 Agriculture, Earth and Environmental Science and Food Technology students have embarked on the annual Murray Darling Basin camp. Our first stop was SELX livestock saleyards in Yass, to learn all about the sale of livestock and the legislation in place to address sustainability and animal welfare. We set up camp for the first night alongside the Hume Dam, an important starting point for our trip to allow us to understand the Murray Darling irrigation system.
The next day at Yarrawonga Weir, we learnt about how the Murray River is split here for water access for NSW & Victorian irrigated farms and how this access to water impacts the type of farming that can occur. Our guide Emily also shared her knowledge as a rice farmer, and we were able to hear of the ongoing research to improve the sustainability in rice growing in Australia.
We visited an irrigated farm outside of Tocumwal to view various methods of irrigation used and hear of the emerging technology employed to offer efficiency of operations and water use.
We are now set up at camp in Moama alongside the Murray River. We will use this as our base for the next two days so we can explore farms and food production in Deniliquin and across the border in Echuca.
