Tanabata is celebrated on the 7th day of the 7th month in most of Japan, however there are big celebrations in Sendai on 7 August. Years 8 -10 Japanese classes have been learning about ‘tanabata’ which is called the ‘Star Festival’ in English. According to a Chinese legend, the two stars Altair and Vega, which are usually separated from each other by the Milky Way, are able to meet.
One popular Tanabata custom is to write "tanzaku", which are colourful strips of paper with one's wish written on them, which are then hung on bamboo, in the hope that the wishes become true. Students in years 8-10 enjoyed creating tanzaku, and have made a lovely display in the library.
