An interesting three day excursion to Sydney for year 10 Marine Studies students from the 15 – 17 November.
The trip took in the Sydney Seafood Market, Sydney Cooking School and Sea Life. The purpose of the trip was to give students, an insight into the seafood industry, an ability to prepare seafood they would not usually use and experience a large scale aquarium.
On day one we visited the Kiama blowhole and learned of its prehistoric past. We then travelled to Cockatoo Island where we set up camp for the next two nights.
Day two began with visiting Sealife aquarium, where we were lucky enough to see them feeding the giant rays and sharks. Later in the day we journeyed to The Sydney Cooking School at the Sydney Fish Markets where students prepared a paella using blue swimmer crabs, mussels, vangole, squid and Crystal Bay prawns. There was also a vegetarian option and a chicken option. After preparing and cooking the meals the students sat down in the restaurant and enjoyed the fruits of their labour.
We rose early on Day three and caught the first ferry to the Fish markets where we had a tour of the auction floor while selling was taking place. This gave students a scope of the amount and variety of seafood sold at the markets. During their tour they were shown some of the technology used to keep the produce fresh and a lot of information about the various species sold. They also were shown the local fishing fleet and some of the retail outlets.
We then travelled home via Ulladulla where we fortunate to see a tuna boat unload.
