Discovering Displacement

Year 10 science students were tasked with extracting copper metal from copper oxide. They created a mixture of zinc and copper oxide then lit the substance with a Bunsen burner. The zinc displaced the chemically-bound copper to create zinc oxide. The new substance was then refined in an acid. The final substance exhibited tinges of the characteristic copper colour, which stood in vast contrast to the black powder they started with.
