Fighting the Power in Nowra

Volleyball team member dig

The Moruya High Girls Volleyball team rallied to record their best result ever in the CHS South Coast competition being placed 4th overall.

The teams gathered early on the autumnal morning in a battle royale for the championship and a coveted place to go to the Combined High Schools NSW Championship in Sydney. Captain Kailee led the girls in an early fierce encounter against Bulli High. Setter Sophie controlled the attack and helped guide the team to a 2 sets to 1 victory.

Next came our neighbours Narooma. It was a titanic battle for control of the net with Hayley defending and attacking in a see-sawing game with Moruya winning the first set 23-21 but unable to resist the unflinching Narooma attack and losing the next two sets.

The heavily star-studded Wollongong Performing Arts High School swept Moruya High in two sets. Moruya had to take a deep breath and rally.

Kiama High was going to be a challenge and with the serve of Abby and attack of Jessica, the Moruya team came back from the loss of the first set to grind out a second set victory. Despite jumping out to an early lead the Kiama team came back to snatch victory in the third gruelling set.

Tired and having to lift for one final game against the impending champions, the girls walked on the court. Lara and Macie did everything to shut down the Nowra attack and Sari stared down many vicious serves. Nowra hammered away and took the game and the day with their victory over Moruya in the final game.

The team never gave up and were complimented on their performance by referees and other coaches on the day. They were excellent ambassadors of the school and despite the close calls aging Mr Northey on the sidelines; were a positive joy to coach and take away.

How did we celebrate? A full-throated ABBA carpool karaoke through downtown Nowra - that is how we do it at Moruya!

Special thanks to Mr Duncan Norris for the early morning training sessions and Mr Bugden for negotiating the long trip home in the bus – hail to the bus driver.
